;___; Gandalf is one of my favourite characters, and this piece perfectly distills what I love about him. He's temperamental and cranky, yes, but also incredibly compassionate, kind-hearted and generous of spirit... to both kings and innkeepers, as your last line so aptly summarises! I loved seeing that through Butterbur's eyes, from him saving bb!Barly (omg ;__;), reassuring older, paternal Barliman, and of course helping his wife. Lovely work. :)

It is a rare occasion when a fic *not* about Frodo and his ordeals brings me to tears. This, however, was just such an occasion. What a priceless and gently, yet powerfully, moving exploration of a lesser-known (but no less real) character from canon. You've written a gorgeous gapfiller here. Thank you so much for sharing it. :)
