Chapter 1: Hobbit Names and Naming Conventions

Wow! This is so well done, thought-provoking and insightful, not to mention informative. I am fascinated by the wealth of information you've presented here, Dreamflower. I confess, the many naming traditions and rules are a lot to absorb, but your article goes a long way toward helping me to understand it all better, most especially the differences between the families. Goes to show us just how much work can go into choosing the right names for our OC's.

This was great, and a huge help to all of us hobbit writers, especially ones like myself who are a bit befuddled by the rules. Your essay makes it a lot easier to understand where it all came from! Well done!!

Author's Response:

Thank you!  It's just what I hoped.  The right hobbit name can sometimes make or break a story, so it's important that it *be* just right!  The rules really are not that hard, but I think it will be useful to have them there all in one place, so to speak.

And also it was fun to figure all that out! *grin*  I'm glad you liked it.

The Fellowship has not travelled together for long but already it is apparent that the One Ring’s influence on Frodo Baggins is growing. As he struggles to keep his increasingly dark thoughts at bay, his companions are finding they also are subject to a subtle increase in moodiness. Frodo has taken to sleepwalking, Pippin, to night wandering and secrecy. Although Legolas has discovered part of Pippin’s secret, he allows himself to believe Pippin’s reassurances, and agrees to keep what he knows to himself for the time being.

Before long, a blizzard traps the Fellowship in a cave where their problems escalate, and suspicions grow difficult to ignore. . .

Feature Yule At Great Smials by Dreamflower

Rated G
[Reviews - 1]
Table of Contents

Summary--well, here's Pearl's request, which I attempted to fulfill, with the possible exception of the lightning, which ended up being merely metaphorical.

"Request:
I would like a humorous story with the setting at the Great Smials. Pippin is very young (but not an infant). Gandalf is present and is putting on a fireworks show to celebrate Yule. The story must include a lightening strike as a secondary element, but without any great emphasis on the resulting fire. At some point, Gandalf gets into the holiday punch, which of course, has been spiked!"

Chapter 1: Yule at Great Smials

Oh, this is one of my favorite parts of this story, it's just so Pippin-ish:

"Mama--I mean Mother! Can't I please go wait for Merry and Frodo? I'll be good. I won't go in the road or anything! Pleasepleasepleaseplease?" Pippin was wringing his hands and bouncing on his toes.

I recall helping Pearl come up with her request for this Yule fic and you did, as usual, a lovely job! Adding it to my favs list.

Author's Response:

Thank you, Cathleen! I appreciate it!  I did enjoy writing it, even though it did not quite fit into "my" universe, I loved making this one-shot! I'm glad you helped Pearl with her request!

I very much enjoyed reading this! Not only is it an excellent story, I liked getting acquainted with your OC, who I've not read before. Serinde is a very plucky woman, and I have the feeling that the author has a good feel for just where Serinde lives!

My understanding is that this is one of your earliest stories? I am looking forward to reading more! I'd always intended to get around to "The King's Surgeon" and other stories of yours, and I'm glad I've started with this one. You write the hobbits well and I do like stories that take place during and after the Quest. Thank you for an entertaining read, and also, wow - I learned quite a bit about wound closure. Very interesting! I work in an ER, have seen lots of stuff, but have never had anyone explain something like this to me before. It was great!

Oh, and btw - welcome! We're so glad you joined us, Ruth!!

Author's Response:

Thanks Cathleen - yep, this was the very first LOTR fanfic I wrote, about four and a half years ago. I'm really glad you enjoyed this!

Chapter 1: Concerning the Matter of Tom Took

This little tale is one of the most creative and entertaining ones I have ever seen! Pippin is portrayed perfectly and humorously and it's quite obvious he takes his duties as Thain very seriously. I loved the way you took the old nursery rhyme and not only made a very enjoyable story out of it, it's amazing me to me how the way you fit this in so neatly with the Dialogue challenge! Although the story is not that "old" yet, I am already considering it "an old favourite" and that is why I'm reviewing this for the Comment Challenge. Your flair for creativity shines brightly in this story! Most extremely well done, Pearl!!!
