Hello! I'm Dreamflower, and I have been a Lord of the Rings fan since 1967, when I was 15 years old. I have read the books countless times over the years, but I did not begin writing fanfic until 2004.  I've written many stories, nearly all of them hobbit-centric; in addition I am a co-mod of the LOTR_GFIC community and of this archive. In my personal life, I've been married since 1976 (I met my husband through our mutual interest in LotR), and have one son, who is "grown and flown".  LOTR and fanfic are my main hobby, but I have several other hobbies as well: calligraphy, cooking, needlework of all kinds, sewing, decorative painting and polymer clay are all other creative outlets for me.

A Simple Task Gone Awry by Pearl Took

Rated G
[Reviews - 1]
Table of Contents

Written for the December 2008 LOTR Community Challenge's Yule Exchange. -- Mattygirl requested: I would like a story that involves Frodo angst, during the quest. Basically, I just want Frodo to be hurt or sick and Aragorn and the others (but especially Aragorn) to get him better again. It can be as long and draw out as the writer likes. -- Frodo is wanting to do for himself instead of being the pampered Ringbearer, but when his efforts go awry, the rest of the Company of the Ring jump to conclusions.

*snicker* I'd forgotten all about this one! LOL! Poor Frodo-- no one ever lets him do ANYTHING!  And I loved Gandalf's Sherlock Holmes imitation!

Do you suppose he ever got the picture hung?

Author's Response:

Thank you, Dreamflower! :-)  I think this was part of my personal protest regarding pathetic St. Frodo. LOL The dear Hobbit really doesn't fall apart too badly until he get back to the Shire. I thik see his home land in ruins was one blow he couldn't take.

I think Gandalf and Holmes are related ;-)

Yes, he got the picture hung the very next day. Everyone stood there and watched - just to make sure he didn't hurt himself.  LOL

Chapter 1: Chapter 1 "Where Shadows Lay No More"

Oh, sweetie! I had forgotten this lovely story of yours for our first challenge. I'm glad I got the chance to re-read it!

I don't know if I told you at the time, but I just love the change in tone between the parts in the hobbits' POV and the parts that were in Boromir. It worked really well.

And the ending was very touching.

Author's Response:

Thank you so much Barbara! That means a lot to me.

Chapter 1: Reflection

I really like seeing this moment in young Aragorn's life, and the way his brothers were able to take the drama out of it all with just a couple of words.

I love your descriptions at the beginning. Very evocative!

Author's Response:

*blushes rosily, though it's hard to tell with the sunburn* Thank you, Dreamflower, so very much! I really appreciate your kind words.

I'd often wondered what Aragorn thought about being the Heir of Isildur. I seriously doubted he went around thinking Isildur's blood had tainted him, or whatever movie-verse Aragorn had thought, yet I supposed it was natural for him to wonder whether he might make the same mistake Isildur did. Thus this was born. And I've always loved the twins.

Thanks so much for reading and reviewing!

This sets Ulmo apart in so many ways; his compassion for the innocent is not blind. Though he can't change what will happen, he understands more than his fellows.

And of course, if the One is seeing to the destruction--He is also allowing the saving of the remnant.

One thing I really love in this is that you show that very "Arda quality" of everything being sentient, self-aware: even the stones made choices.

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

I had nearly forgotten this delightful little story!  I love your take on it, and that it was BILBO who introduced Pippin to that moldy old room!

"And years later, even though he knew it was idle fancy telling him Bilbo might still be alive over in the West, when at last he was in a position to do anything about it Pippin wrote a note detailing the respectful restoration of the apartment and placed it in the hands of one of the Elves at the Havens."

Such a Pippish thing to do, and such a very perfect ending!  And depending on when Pippin handed over that note-- well, it might have reached its intended recipient.

Author's Response:

Well, I'd seen two requests for Pippin finding the room previously, and they were all Grand Adventure This and Pippin In Trouble That so I had to do something nice, normal, and different.  Bilbo lent himself very nicely for that.

I have no clue how time in Eressea would work, or when Pippin handed the note over, so I enjoyed getting to leave the possibility open.

I just love all the work and effort put into making Yew's new cage.  I think Paladin must have had just as much fun as Pippin building it!

I'm glad he likes his new home-- but Vinca's insistance that he's "hers" if he gets out worries me just a little!

Author's Response: Thank you so much, Dreamflower! Yes, I think it was a labor of love, not so much for Yew, but between father and son. Vinca is like that, yes she is. hehehe. I really don't know where things are going, so we'll have to see if she ends up a problem or not. Thanks again! Pearl

Chapter 4: Chapter 4

Well, the shinies going missing were a pretty big clue!

My favorite part, though, was Pippin's confrontation with Vinca, and his threatening her with "poop"-- which would probably have worked on one of his other sisters (though they probably would not have taken Yew in the first place) and then this bit:

Red in the face and out of ideas, Pippin's station as the baby of the family asserted itself.

"Mama! Mama!" he yelled as he ran from his sister's room. "Vinca stole Yew!"

Lanti did what most wise mothers do at this point . . . she took the object of contention, said "He's mine for now.", put Yew into one of her shopping baskets that had a lid, then told the children their father would settle the matter when he came in

Now *why* did that sound oh so very familiar? Oh yes, I recall-- I had a younger sister and brother myself...

Author's Response: Yes the shinies getting filched was a biggie, but, oh well it was necessary. The only way I was coming up with any ideas was to keep asking myself what dragons were like and what did they do. I'm so glad you liked that part! I only had an older brother, but I remember such exchanges and ending up frustrated that I couldn't out reason him and resorting to running to mama. Then, of course, I was on the "mama" end of it with my own two kids. Thank you, Dreamflower, for such a lovely comment! I'm so glad you're enjoying this story.

What a polite and well-spoken young dragon Yew is! And clearly, he's not related to Smaug or Glauraung or Ancalagon the Black!  He's very honorable.

But deciding what to do with him?  That's not going to be easy.

Poor Pippin.

Author's Response: Perhaps, he's too young to be too arrogant yet. LOL I like to think it is because he's been amongst the family of Paladin Took. I'll have to remember to have a scene with how Pippin feels about it all and how he handles it. Thank you so much, Dreamflower, for you wonderful comments and encouragement. :-)

I love the way Gandalf is his usual "close" self-- not disclosing anything to the curious Bilbo and Frodo.  I also love the bit about his dropping his pipe when he *did* see what Paladin wanted, and the way he went straight to the Dwarves to find out what was going on.

But I do hope he's not planning to give Yew back to the Dwarves! Yew would not care for *that* at all!

Author's Response: Hi Dreamflower! I'm glad my Gandalf is as he should be. In his role in ME he's had a lot of secrets to keep, so he has lots of practice. I don't think he'll hand the poor dragon over to the Dwarves, he has more sense than that. ;-)

Chapter 9: Chapter 9

I'm copying my LJ review here:

Good for Gandalf!

I love the idea that the Dwarves came up with "Dragon's eggs" as a childrens' toy, and that they did not know it was real-- I had wondered what on earth they'd be doing with a real dragon's egg!

I'm wondering how Gandalf is going to handle this-- I have a very silly, cracky idea, but I'm sure you will come up with a believable solution! And just to add-- I am really looking forward to the rest!

Author's Response: Quite all right to copy :-) You're a dear to respond in two places. The toys were one of those serendipitous things that popped into my head and it worked well since we are told there were gifts and toys of Dwarf make given at The Party. It really wouldn't be quite right for lads to fight the Battle of the Five Armies without a Smaug to battle first. After you find out my version, I would love to hear your silly, cracky one. :-) Thank you so much for looking forward to the rest of the story.

Author's Response: Aw, bless you and thank you m'dear. I think we have a way to go yet, at least three more chapters. At least I know where it is heading :-) Thank you so much, Dreamflower for following this dragon's tale! Hugs, Pearl

"Something dark was coming. A quick vision of a mighty dragon tortured and in chains flitted through his mind as the gate opened and closed."

How I love this description of the Ring! So Yew has overheard.  I wonder what Gandalf will make of that?  I'm sure he will be able to know if Yew knows!

Author's Response:

Well, the vision was Ring caused but I was meaning that he was seeing Glaurung, Father of Dragons, under the power of Morgoth. Sauron is really only Morgoth's slave and so the evil in the Ring is just a continuation of Morgoth's evil.

But, hey, it does work well for the Ring as well! I can imagine the Ring's power showing up to Yew as something that would torture a full grown dragon.

I hadn't thought about Gandalf knowing Yew has over heard. Interesting point!

Aw, what a sweet and sad goodbye!  And yet, of course, you had to keep everything the way it happened. I suppose the story's nearing an end-- I'll be sad to see that happen!

I wonder if Pippin ever gets to see Yew again?

Author's Response:

I'm glad you liked their goodbye.  I was sorry it had to be so short, poor Pip and Yew didn't get to say much to each other.

Yes, we are nearing the end, especially since I'm hoping that chapter 16 will be the last.

I don't know if they'll meet again, but it will be its own short story if they do ;-)

Chapter 25: Final Gathering

I love the way you lead from hobbit-mischief accomplished to a deeper and more serious conversation. Boromir continues to have his eyes opened in ways both large and small.

I'd love to have seen the expression of outrage on Frodo's face when accosted by a barrage of snowballs--and I think that he will pay his cousins back first, and take his time to get back at Aragorn.

Author's Response:

And I rejoice that you enjoyed this.  Yes, there is still much for Boromir to learn about his companions, and he is now aware that Aragorn has been seriously wounded in the past and yet thinks lightly about it, and that Aragorn is perhaps hopelessly in love with Elrond's daughter.

It's possible that Frodo just might try to get back at his cousins and Sam and later Aragorn, but perhaps he may decide that in this case what he got was well deserved.  We'll have to see where the muse leads the tale, I suppose.  But I, too, would have loved to see his face when the snowballs found him accurately!  (And I enjoyed the thought of three hunky Dunedain warriors bathing, of course!  I may be a senior citizen in the eyes of many, but there's life in me yet!  Heh!)

I saw this pop up on "Random Story" and just couldn't resist a re-read.  It's still so cute and funny.

My Pippin has some rather odd animal naming habits himself. Up until the Quest, he named all his pets after food.  Afterwards, well, he still named most of them after food, but the occasional cat gets an Elf name!

I'm sure Esme was quite touched by Pippin's choice, and knowing her nephew would have been flattered.

Author's Response:

So glad you enjoyed reading it again.  It's interesting how we all find ourselves defining quirks in our characters!  And I'm certain Esme was pleased and honored to have the foal named for her.

Chapter 5: Chapter 4

I thought I'd review one of my favorite chapters-- I love this one where she meets Sandra and begins to realize that the tales she's been reading may very well be true, as she knows now that there are those who take them seriously. You show the beginning of their friendship quite beautifully.

But now the loaning of the Red Book makes me shudder! I want to say "Don't do it Sandra! Loan her a copy!"  *sigh*

Author's Response:

I cringed writing that scene!  And yes, Sandra probably should have given her a copy, but there's a significant chance that Kira wouldn't have ended up falling for the tales if she had.  Or at least, she wouldn't have fallen nearly so hard.

Anyhow, thank you so much for the review!  There is something magical about Kira starting to put things together, long before anything goes wrong...

Chapter 1: Gifts Go Round

Oh, what a delight to see this here and read it again, Larner!  This makes me smile so much!

Author's Response:

So glad you rejoice to have it here.  I'm transferring over some of my other stories, and as you've been doing I've been doing ones with a Yule theme first.  I hope to have most of them transferred soon.

Chapter 4: See the blazing Yule before us

This was just as much fun as I remembered it! *grin* I did enjoy the old Dame making the King and Steward jump through hoops to get her mistletoe, LOL!

Author's Response:

Many thanks for your much appreciated review. I'm pleased you enjoyed this. I had great fun creating old Gudrun!
